Jenaplan education founder, Peter Petersen was born in Flensborg, a city in the northern region of Germany. He served as teacher and administration staff in school before being appointed as professor of educational science in Jena in 1923. The professorship was also associated with the management of the affiliated university school. At this school, he put his concept of alternative school to the test. In 1927, Petersen presented his school concept at the New Education Fellowship Congress. The name of ‘Jena” can be traced back to the place, Jena University where the concept originated and was implemented, following other school concepts such as Dalton Plan and Winnetka Plan. Later, more Jenaplan schools were established in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Japan and others. According to philosophy of Jenaplan education, children life consists of four basic activities which are speaking together, working together, playing together and celebrating together. Children learn in a balance between relatively static and dynamic activities in Jenaplan school.
 
In Jenaplan school, learning is derived from children’s wonder and curiosity about their surroundings, everyday life, life and world. Teachers observe children’s interest in the surrounding environment before guiding and inspiring children to share and talk about their thoughts and feelings of first hand and immediate experience by witnessing, listening, touching, smelling and experimenting. That means we work by starting from the world of children while make use of current affairs before dive into history from here to know what was it like in the earlier periods? World orientation learning is thematic learning and children are learning different courses and subjects in a thematic approach. World orientation stands for getting to know the way so that you can later find your own place in society.
 
In this workshop, you will learn what is the philosophy and ideas of world orientation learning in Jenaplan education. You will also learn how to implement world orientation learning in your classroom, your school or any learning place.

1. Jaap Meijer:

 
For many years Jaap have worked as a group leader in a multi-aged group and director in Jenaplan education. Especially at the Hoge Land in Epe. From 1997 until now. He is the director of the Dutch Jenaplan Association. In that capacity, he have organized many large NJPV conferences. From the NJPV, he was actively involved in the network SOVO, a joint venture of educational innovation movements. From 1997 to May 2007, he worked at LBVO (National Education Support Agency for Innovative Education). Now he works as a zzp'r with the office jenaplan specialist.
